There's this thing about the words right-
hollow casts
patchy veneered cases we all point to and pick off the shelf
hand over like they're filled with lead
when we know it's just hot air.
They hang it up to dry with the rest.
Thank goodness for recycling.

The first attempt to fill a balloon with plaster. Quickly realized that the pressure of pouring plaster was not enough to expand the balloon.

After much plotting and planning, decided on making the first part (the balloon positive) by inflating a balloon and coating it with multiple layers of plaster.

Detail of the top "handle" of the balloon, enlarged to ensure the eventual negative cast would have a sufficient "exit point" when wax would be poured in/out.

Process detail of making the three part mould. Balloon was casted in thirds based on research into glass bottle casting. Most bottles are minimum three parts, often times up to 8.

Success! The three part mould could then be soaked in water to ensure the hot wax would not adhere irreparably to the plaster.

Due to tempermental heat/time/wetness balance, took the balloon outside to cool it faster before the balloon dried out too much.

An experiment using a hairdryer to gently bend and manipulate the wax to emulate latex, an exploded balloon while still retaining some structure and material understanding of it as a wax balloon.

Attempted using pine resin rather than the dammar resin I was using to temper the beeswax. The dammar resin is what is used in traditional encaustic painting. Pine resin made it layer strangely and easily shatter.

A metal workshop attempt at metal "balloon string stands"-- an interesting investigation but did not work in the end. I did't like the look of it and they were too unsturdy.
